Information for our first semester students in winter semester 2020

Dear first semester students,

dear Erstis,

welcome to the website of the Institute of Materials Science.

The following information is for all those who want to start a Bachelor or Master in Materials Science or Materials Science and Business Administartion starting next winter semester.

The start of the semester will be very unusual for all of us. For you, because it is your first semester and for us, because we cannot welcome you as we have always done.

Usually the start of the semester consists mainly of getting to know people, be they lecturers or fellow students, and places. And this is exactly what is very difficult to do this semester. Nevertheless we will do our best to give you a good start.

It is planned that on 26.10.2020 there will be a general welcome by the president and the deans of the faculties for all new students as a live stream (https://www.uni-kiel.de/de/veranstaltungen/erstsemesterbegruessung).

The student council of the Faculty of Technology also offers an orientation event. However, the date for this has not yet been fixed.

As the coordinator of the Materials Science programs, I will also give you a detailed insight into the course of your studies and show and explain the most important things.

The dates are fixed. I will offer three events, all online, so that everyone can participate, even if she/he is not yet in Kiel.

Bachelor Material Science
Tue, 27.10.2020, 10:00 a.m.

Bachelor Materials Science and Business Administration
Wed, 28.10.2020, 10:00 a.m.

Master Materials Science and Engineering + Business Administration
Thu, 29.10.2020, 10:00 a.m.

I will start the meeting about 15 minutes before, so you can log in. Please also check your new university email account regularly (stu...@mail.uni-kiel.de).

You will soon notice that most of the teaching will still be offered online in the coming semester. As the Faculty of Technology, we actually got quite good feedback on the online teaching last semester, and I'm sure we will improve it again in the winter semester.

Teaching at the university has always been different from teaching at schools. But now the difference will be even more serious for you. Together we will try to get rid of all the problems and stumbling blocks as early as possible so that you will all have a good start.

In addition to events with all students, we will divide lectures into smaller groups of 5-10 people, who can then take turns to be there to see and get to know everything. The rest of you will be connected to the lecture via video. If we are not in the lecture room, we will of course offer this event several times for all groups. And yes, we can also "optimize" the group division afterwards.

It will be important that you all have the opportunity to participate online. You will need a computer with a camera and a microphone. You can also do all this via cell phone, but you will need a computer or notebook for your work at the university anyway. And: the microphone should always be a headset, otherwise there will be unpleasant feedback in the conferences. But the headset on the cell phone works very well.

Why I am writing this to you: I recommend you to make sure that you have these things by the end of October. Believe me, you won't be the only ones who want to order these things from the big online retailers.

If someone has problems with them or needs help or has any other questions that need to be answered before starting your studies, he/she can already contact my colleagues or me.

We are all looking forward to welcoming you in October!

With kind regards,

Oliver Riemenschneider
