Application Documents

German applicants: Please send us a written application (Do not send originals, as the enclosed copies will be destroyed in case of rejection!).

International applicants: Please apply only online until March 1st. After having completed the online application, you will receive a pdf-document via email. To confirm your application you have to send us a signed printout of this document to the address mentioned in the e-mail. The deadline for the mandatory return of your signed pdf application copy is March, 5th (date of receipt). Beside this signed printout your letters of recommendation are the only documents you have to send us. We do NOT need copies of the documents that you have uploaded for your application, e.g. degree certificates. If you are accepted for the degree programme you will have to bring the respective translated and certified documents when registering at Kiel University.


Please check the mentioned list to ensure that you have ready all the necessary documents. All documents must be certified and translated. (certificates in English need not to be translated).


List of application documents

  • Application form: German applicants download and complete the application form, International applicants use the on-line application
  • Certificate of graduation from school which qualifies the applicant to study at a university in her or his home country, including an overview of grades and subjects.
  • Report or certificate of a university entrance examination passed in your country and/or proof of registration from a university (including a complete list of grades), if applicable.
  • University transcripts including a list of subjects and grades.
  • Certificate of a completed bachelor course or similiar / provisional degree.
  • Verification of proficiency in English.
    We accept TOEFL (Institution Code 8638), Cambridge Proficiency Certificate or IELTS.
    It is also possible to certificate that the bachelor course was tought in English, but this has minor influence in the ranking.
    Native speaker can also apply without a certification and will be ranked depending on their country!
  • Curriculum vitae, including a complete overview of the applicant's education.
  • A letter of purpose, explaining why the applicant wants to join the Masters Programme in Materials Science and Engineering in Kiel and what are his future plans.
  • At least two letters of recommendation. The referees can also send it directly to


  • Applications from China, Vietnam or Mongolia will only be accepted if the certificate from the Academic Examination Board is enclosed (see here).
