"Smart Transformer: a new gateway for energy routing"

There are several ways in which the electrical distribution grid can be redesigned to allow for more inflow of renewable energies and, at present, no consensus is reached on the best technical scenario in terms of performance and economic feasibility. A different path exists: re-inventing the distribution transformer, after more than 125 years since its first use in the electrification of a city, as a new gateway compatible with whichever will be the new distribution grid. The new distribution transformer is called “Smart Transformer” because it manages the energy and the information flows from sources and loads and, at the same time, supports the development of the infrastructure for electric vehicles providing re-charging stations. The latest power electronics and communication technologies will be utilized. Power electronics is moving fast towards lower cost/volume and communication is wide-spread, but not yet properly used in the distribution grid.
